About this ride
The Golden Eagle and Upper Ranch Loop is a scenic 3.8-mile hike through Vargas Plateau Regional Park in the Fremont Hills. With approximately 620 feet of elevation gain, this moderately challenging loop combines rolling grasslands, open ridgelines, and sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, Mission Peak, and Niles Canyon.
Starting at the Vargas Plateau Staging Area, the route follows Golden Eagle Trail before joining Upper Ranch Trail, winding through peaceful ranchland and gently undulating hills. The open landscape offers excellent opportunities to spot hawks, golden eagles, deer, and other wildlife.
Expect a mix of gradual climbs, short steeper sections, and exposed terrain with little shade. Allow approximately two hours to complete the loop at a comfortable pace, including stops for photos and views.
The hike is particularly beautiful during the cooler months, when seasonal rains turn the hills green. Spring brings wildflowers, while clear winter mornings can offer expansive Bay Area views.
**Good for:** A moderate morning hike, scenic photography, wildlife watching, and a relaxed outdoor outing without committing to a full day.
